FINAL DIGIPACK

This is my final digipack , the first one i posted i thought it looked a bit plain so i wanted it to sttand out more so i thought ill make a few adjustments.

FINAL DIGIPACK COVER

Finally my Digipack has finished now i have to make my magazine cover and do my evaluation questions.After a lot of deleting , editing and hours i was able to create my digipack and i have learned not to leave my hardest work to the last minute.

BACK COVER

This is the back cover of my album , i used black and white again to make the picture of me on the horse stand out. Using the brightness tool it allowed me to brighten the horse and by using the blur tool it allowed me to blur the background. Furthermore in the back cover i included a barcode which all albums have and a logo for a production company. 

CD COVER

This is my CD cover picture , I did this black an white  and used the background of the ocean to match my Album name. I wanted to keep this simple. But the process of making was very difficult 

INSIDE PICTURE

For my inside cover i also decided to use colour as it will catch the audiences attention. I did not want it to be very dull i wanted to have vibrance. However this time the girl i used is me , i did this to show that the CD has a story , and i wanted to base it on two girls and i wanted to keep it simple. But adding the red helped me to make it more stand out and i did a puzzle effect and separated the picture in pieces 

MY FRONT COVER

This is my album cover , at first i wanted to have it all black and white however after i realised that it was not as eye catching as adding a colour to it. So i left the girl as black and white however did the background in colour. Which made the picture stand out more. Furthermore i wanted to create a 3D effect for this reason i added the picture of the girl 3 times and placed them diagonally which gave it a different effect. Furthermore i used that type of font as it is sharp and eye catching.

BAND NAME AND ALBUM NAME

After a lot of thinking i have come up with the name DROWNING for my album name and band name OZH .

I choose drowning as my album is based on two girls who are going through a  dark stage in there life. I also used 'drowning " my cover and CD  background had elements of the ocean which can represent the drowning. Also my front cover is of Olivia underwater with the ocean in the background.

I choose the band name OZH as it is something simple and everyone can remember , furthermore it stands out and it will grab the audiences attention as it is easy to read.

USING PHOTOSHOP

For someone that has never used photoshop before it was very had . As i did not understand any of the tools , laters or how to create effects. However i did my search online using Goggle and Youtube and watched various videos on youtube and even found photoshops own youtube page. Shown below.

Using this helped me to gather few techniques on how to create certain effects and how to make the picture stand out more. 

Furthermore photoshop also has options where we could use any template we want and i will show you in my next blog post what i have used. 

But this is what it looks like on the main page.

DIGIPACK UPDATE

It was not the best idea to leave my digipack to the last minute as its one of the hardest part of the course work as you need to use photoshop and if you have not used it before it can get a bit difficult. However I have  managed to finish my Digipack and now all i have to do is my  , magazine cover and  evaluation.

MAIN PICTURE FOR DIGIPACK

For my digipack i will use Olivia's face under the water in the bath tub. I want to keep it simple but powerful . Through the picture people will understand or can work out the style of music it would be. However as well as dark and gloomy i want to make sure that it has positive aspects too.

Here are some of the shots i got from shooting in the bathroom of Olivia.

BATHROOM SCENE

In our music video we included a bathroom scene. These shots were small and quick however they were important as they held a lot of emotion. Angling the camera appropriately was very hard on the tripod so we used the camera hand held to get better angles and shots. We created over the shoulder shots so that the audience can see through what our character sees and through these shots we gave closer feeling to our audience.

MEANING OF OUR MUSIC VIDEO

We wanted to create a music video to shown people how money can not buy happiness as in todays society everyone is very dependent on the thought of money. So we wanted to show how two very different people can still go through the same emotions and that money does not change how we feel.

INTERTEXTUALITY

Goodwin theory - Many music videos draw upon the cinema as a starting point. Most mainstream music videos have a cinematic feel due to the new technologies and post production techniques.
Intertextuality  is when when media texts reference another media text. Can either be through the style of video or in a parody. It can help audience take further levels of meaning away from the text.

Madonna - Material girl has a cinematic reference which dominate the music video. In this video the intertextuality is of the sexy blond who uses her looks to get what she wants.

IMPROVEMENTS

If i would have had to do this music video again the improvements i would of been to make the narrative more clear as the audience have suggested this to us in our feedback sheet, and if we strengthen our music video we would gain more popularity and attention. However for the improvement section on the feedback sheet , this section was mostly left blank .

NARRATIVE

One of the question the audience had to answer on our feedback sheet was if we understood what the narrative was. I think it was a hard question for them to answer as most have left it blank some said no and some said yes.  However the only reason why some did not understand the narrative was because they could not distinguish between the poor and the rich girl. 

However we did try our best to show the difference between the two characters through the location type and mise en scene. 

COSTUME FOR OUR VIDEO

As we have to characters in our music video we thought we plan it very well to make sure you can distinguish between the rich and the poor girl. 

For the poor girl's dress code we have ripped leggings , oversized jumper with stains and messy hair and no makeup. However for the rich girl, she was dressed in normal leggings with a smart top and her hair was not messy. 

However due to both of them going through a hard time they both had sad expressions and they were both seen distressed and depressed. 

WHERE CAN YOU FIND A MUSIC VIDEO?

 In todays society if people want to watch music videos the first place they would look at is Youtube. However this is not the only place where music videos can be found. They are now shown on TV's and various channels. However the most popular channel for music videos are MTV.

DIGIPACK FONT CHOICE

I have finally started doing my digipack however for it to stand out i would have to choose a font that matches my theme of simplicity however powerfulness. For this reason i am going to choose a font from a website called DEFONT.COM where a lot of different fonts are usable.
Below i will be posting few examples of the fonts however the title is not my of my choice.(Its images from online so i did not do the title).

AUDIENCE THEORY

Hypodermic Needle Theory:

States that madd media has a direct and powerful effect on the audience . Mass media in 1940's were perceived as a massive influence on  behaviour change. The theory suggests that the mass media influence the way people think and act. The media injects or shoots messages into people brains directly and people are not able to response they just believe everything the mass media injects which makes humans the victim in media.

Most effective group is youths as they have always been shown as ignorant and arrogant  in media for this reason people treat youth differently and blame them for everything that happened in todays society.

Digipaks can come in various sizes and templates. You can choose what you would like as your template and create a design that will fit what you want.

HOW IS MUSIC DISTRIBUTED?

You can distribute music using various media platforms to being with you can distribute it on Itunes which is one of the most used programmes for music and there are other options such as spotify , youtube, Amazon music, Google play and also Deezer which is a new programme. 

Digital distribution has become more popular as it is easier and quicker, to publish. Which results in more labels to be released as you do not need to produce any copies and it is much cheaper to produce and distribute it. 

SMOKING

In our music video we have few clips of our female character smoking ( Me) However we were advised to take some of the clips out of our production as it was too much and could lead to being influential on our target audience. And we have taken this advise and removed the shots were you can see a girl holding a cigarette.

MEDIA SHOWCASE

In order to reach to our target audience we showed our production in the showcase we held couple of weeks ago , from the showcase we were able to reach to our audience and get feedback as they had to fill up a form.The information we got from the forms will help us with our evaluation questions.

SONG NAME

To finalise our music video we had to choose a song name. This was not as hard as choosing a band name as it is simple and we needed to choose a work that represents our music video.
As our song name we choose "Voiceless" this describes both of our characters as they are both voiceless and cant be heard by the society.

BAND NAME

It was really hard to find a band name which we both liked and would be good representation of our video for this reason Olivia and I choose to pick my Surname "Borova" as a band name , as its different and not used before. We even looked at random name generator websites online however  e could not find anything that represented our production.

Then you write a word in the optional word bar and then it creates you a name as an example i wrote the word "Happy " and this is what it generated .

The Weeknd

The artist name is in bold and white font , it does not draw the interest form the image, it is simple but still effective. It is easier to distinguish the title of the album.

DIGIPACK IDEA

For my digipack i wanted to create something that is simple and basic but very powerful in explanation. I want it to be able to get the audiences attention. I want it to be dark to represent our theme of darkness and depression. 

The artist I will be using as a guide line is the Weeknd. 

Binary Opposition Theory

This theory of Levi Strauss applied to our project as we used binary opposition of rich and poor. One of the girls which was me was represented as the poor and Olivia was represented as poor. We showed these representations by using Mise en `scene the way the characters dressed and the different location types. 

Storyboard

In our AS production we created a storyboard however we did not  stick to and follow it strictly. However for our A2 project we made a storyboard and stuck to it and by doing this it allowed us to use our time more wisely , everything was more organised and even when we started the project a bit later then the rest of the groups due to changing our idea we still managed to shoot everything on time also edit it. 

We did occasionally go of track to due some complications with the weather however for most of the project we used the storyboard as our guideline to produce a final product. 

VLOG UPDATE

This was a vlog that we did while filming in Waterloo.

FILMING COMPLICATIONS

During our filming we had various complications and i think this helped us produce a really good product as implications help you to do a better production. One of the implications was when Olivia was filming and we did not realise that the shots were only 1-2 seconds long. So we had to go back and film again. Here is a video of us trying to fix everything and get everything finished before the battery in our camera died. :

LOCATION

Now that we finished our filming i wanted to show the locations where we shoot our video. 
Firstly we went to the graffiti tunnel in Waterloo. Where we shoot some shots. From there we went to London Eye and started to shoot in that location of shots of me and Olivia to show a contrast. 
Due to changing our narrative and song choice we  arranged to shoot at a new location which was Olivia's house , where we got the scenes of Olivia going under the water. Here are some shots of the locations :

Reverse Shots

We decoded to use this editing tool as we used it last year and created a different affect. On iMove it gave us an option to use this tool so we decided to add it make it look different 

Adding Lip-sync

We decided to change our song choice and by doing this we came up with new ideas for this reason we decided to add lip syncing to out video me and olivia will be lip syncing to some parts of the song which changed our theme too as it is now both narrative and performance. 

Song Change

This is the third time we are changing our song. Due to just finding the right song for our music video and we think this song choice fits in perfectly with what we are trying to show in our music video. Also with this song we found it much easier to edit and it flows and fits in more perfectly with the shots. In addition to this we had to go out and get new footage.

Our new song choice is Sia - Breathe Me

How does Digipack benefit artist?

Digipacks are beneficial to the artist as it represents the artist and shows us their genre. Usually  it will create a theme that represent artist and in come cases can even deliver a message to the audience. 

It is a brand imagie of the artist and can help the artist to become more popular. It also shows the creative ways the artist thinks. It brings emphasise to the product and can make the consumer want to buy it as it includes additional information and pictures. 

This is an example from one of Rihanna's digipack as you can see it promotes the artist and includes loads of pictures and themes. 

DIGIPACK:

WHAT IS A DIGI PACK ?

Digipack is a case packaging.  Digipacks usually come in a book style and plastic trays which can easily hold the CD or DVD. They were first created by MeadWestvaco and their product called DIGI PACK is trademarked.  From then digipacks were used by many manufacturers however it is very popular today.
They are used for statement and to represent the artist.
It is usually made of 4-6 panels and are used to save resources. You can get them in larger panels for extra information.

Filming Schedule

We decided to go and do most of our filming on Thursday and our aim is to get most of our footage done so we can start editing and play around with different effects. 

Stabilising Video

Due some shots of out footage being shaky we decided to stabilise the shots to reduce the shakiness and unwanted motions of the footage. Here is how we did it:

In this video it clearly shows , how the rich and the poor is treated by the community. 

Andrea Arnold : Women in Media

American Honey director Andrea Arnold was "shocked" that only few women are making films .
Figures released in 2015 by Directors of Guild of America show that only 6.4% films in Hollywood in 2014 were directed by women. 

Arnold directed 4 features since 2006 and she added " we have grown up with mainly male stories and most films were written and directed by men , which is only half of human race" 

American Honey Review

American Honey (2016) 

Directed by British Filmmaker , Andrea Arnold , who is a female filmmaker. 

American Honey is a film who shows a strong , independent young women, who has a troubled background and escaped from her problems to face the world . Also shows the relationship between the two young characters , while they continue doing what every young person in their generation did which was to party. 

Budget of the film was 3.5 million - Box office - 1.7 million.

Roland Barthes Symbolic Codes Theory

He suggested that there will be one or more than 5 codes that describe the meaning of the text. 
He said that texts may be "open" or "closed". 

He came up with 5 codes: 

1) Hermeneutic / Enigma Code:
Refers to the mystery within a text. Clues are dropped but clear answers are not given. Enigmas within the narrative make the audience want to know more. Unanswered enigmas tend to frustrate the audience. 

2) Proairetic / Action Code:
Contains sequential elements of action in the text. They add suspense to the text.

3) Semantic Code:
Refers to parts within the text that suggests or refers to additional meanings.  Elements of the semantic code are called SEMES. It has an extra layer of meaning in addition to its literal meaning. 

4) Symbolic Code:
This is about symbolism within the text. Exercises opposites to show contrast and create greater meaning, creating tension , drama and character development. 

5) Referential Code:
Refers to anything in the text which refers to an external body of knowledge such as scientific, historical and cultural knowledge. 

Levi-Strauss Binary Opposition Theory

He believed that the way we understand words depends not on the meaning however by understanding the different of the word and the opposite. which is why the theory is called Binary Opposition. As the opposite of the word is holding a meaning. 

Such as a protagonist or Antagonist, Devil and angel. These are examples of binary opposites. 

Good and evil is the most common binary opposites shown in the media through films. They are used in films to help plots and also used in songs to as part of narrative to reinforce song lyrics. With deeper meanings and advanced technology now it is harder to spot the binary opposites. 

Ferdinand De Saussure Theory

Saussure's study consisted of two parts concept of meaning and sound image . 

It suggests that there could be two levels of meaning in an object within a media text. 

SIGNIFIER - which is there in front of us, what we see , the form that the sign takes. 

SIGNIFIED - Idea which we associate with the signifier , concept that it represents. 

His theory expresses the connection between the signifier and signified is arbitrary with non direct relation between the two.
